what bone health studio stands for?
A diagnosis doesn’t mean you have to stop moving.
At Bone Health Studio, we help take the fear out of exercise for people living with bone and joint health issues. Backed by a plethora of strong evidence and guided by expert care, our approach is designed to help you feel safe, get stronger, and move forward with confidence.
Let BHS be the guide that helps you return to the active life you want.
“There are two types of exercises that are important for building and maintaining bone density: weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises.”

Who Bone Health Studio is designed to help
Evidence-informed strength support for people navigating:
-
We are deeply inspired by the LIFTMOR studies, which helped change the conversation around osteoporosis by showing that well-supervised, progressive resistance training can be both safe and meaningful for people with low bone density. At Bone Health Studio, we use that same evidence-informed mindset to help people build strength, improve confidence, and move forward with less fear.
-
For osteoarthritis, exercise is one of the most strongly recommended treatments, and resistance training can help improve pain, strength, and everyday function. The goal is not to “push through” sore joints, but to help you move better, feel stronger, and rebuild confidence in a way your body can tolerate.
-
RED-S affects more than performance alone — it can compromise bone health, recovery, hormone function, and long-term resilience. Our role is to provide structured strength support within a wider, evidence-informed approach that respects the bigger picture of fuelling, recovery, and bone stress risk.
-
Strength training before surgery can help improve physical readiness, and after surgery it can play an important role in rebuilding strength, function, and confidence. We use a progressive, individualised approach designed to support recovery without losing sight of the bigger goal: getting you back to capable movement.
-
Menopause can bring meaningful changes in bone, muscle, and physical confidence, which is why strength training matters. Research supports resistance training for improving strength and physical function in postmenopausal women, with added value for long-term bone and musculoskeletal health.

What People Are Saying:
“Being borderline osteopenic at 55, I knew I needed to start lifting heavier weights to arrest further decline and strengthen my bones. But despite having been a regular exerciser for years, I’d avoided really heavy weights for years as they seemed too daunting, with the potential for big injuries if not done with the right technique.
Enter stage left, Greg and the Bone Builder programme, recommended by my doctor - the perfect solution!
Both Greg and the fabulous other participants make this a great class every week - lots of knowledge shared, clear cues and close technique supervision by Greg. No slacking off allowed!!… but lots of laughs, and you can still move at your own pace. Thanks guys, I am such a massive fan.” x
— MK - Age 55“Training with Greg is a combination of committed effort, moments of exhaustion, elation from endorphins! Becoming a better version of myself every session! Whoa!”
— CMT - Age 60“I am not going to lie, I was terrified before starting the Bone Builder classes. I was so nervous I nearly cancelled my first session with Greg.
But I went ahead with it and I can honestly say that it’s the most empowering thing I have ever done.
Greg starts you off very, very simply. He places no pressure on you to have to lift big weights to start. In fact he won’t allow you to.
Now as a 67 year old woman with osteoporosis I am lifting nearly 40kg in weight and I have never felt stronger.
I only wish I had started this decades ago.
Thank you Greg, you have changed my life.”

Starting Out: Common Questions
-
In most cases, yes - when it is prescribed properly and matched to the individual. Whether you are dealing with osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, RED-S, menopause-related changes, or preparing for or recovering from surgery, the key is not avoiding strength training, but making sure it is appropriate, supervised, and progressed carefully.
At Bone Health Studio, safety comes first. That means we do not throw people into generic gym-style exercise. We begin by understanding your history, teaching technique carefully, and building load progressively. No exercise programme is completely risk-free, but the bigger risk for many people is often doing too little, losing more strength, balance, and confidence over time.
-
That is completely okay. Many of the people we help are starting from scratch, and you do not need any gym background to begin. Our role is to teach you well, meet you at the right starting point, and help you build confidence step by step.
-
That is very common, and it is exactly why a tailored approach matters. We take into account joint pain, injury history, surgery, movement limitations, and confidence levels so that your training feels supportive, appropriate, and achievable.
-
We begin by understanding your health history, movement, goals, and any barriers that may be holding you back. From there, we adapt exercise choice, technique, range, and loading so that your training matches not just your condition, but your current capacity.
-
Yes. Our classes are intentionally small (6 max) so that everyone receives close support, clear coaching, and careful supervision throughout. The goal is to create an environment where you feel safe, seen, and well looked after as you build strength and confidence.
-
You have two options here:
A pre-screening consultation. This allows us to understand your history, answer your questions, and help decide whether your best starting point is a class, a technique-focused entry option, or more individual support first.
You can jump straight into a Lift Ready class without a pre-screening consult. This allows you to dip your toes in the water, get a feel for how we work then ideally progress into a Bone Builder class.
-
Yes. Strength training is now widely recognised as an important part of supporting bone health, joint health, muscle strength, physical function, and long-term confidence. At Bone Health Studio, our work is shaped by research across osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, menopause, and strength-based rehabilitation, including inspiration from the groundbreaking LIFTMOR studies in bone health.
-
Absolutely. While people often come to us because of a diagnosis, the benefits usually go well beyond that. Better strength, balance, posture, movement confidence, and physical capability can make everyday life feel safer, easier, and far less limiting.
TRUE STORY:
One of the ladies on the Bone Builder Pilot Programme confided in me the other day. For the first session, in Sept 2025, she was so nervous when she got to the front door of the gym that she nearly turned around and went home.
Now, 9 months later, she is still attending 2 sessions per week and is deadlifting 40kg and back squatting 45kg. She has no gym back ground and started lifting 3kg at the start!
Bone Health Studio -
A Story
Born out of the fires of a presentation I wasn’t sure I could pull off, in early 2024 I was asked to present to my (soon-to-be) mother-in-law’s social group, the Rahiri Club.
As a Sports Biomechanist, with over 20 years working with athletes, I was asked to present to a room of 200 ‘wise’ ladies on the evidence-based approach to strength training.
By the end of the 45min presentation, the floor was opened to Q&A (planned for 15min). 30min later the host had to shut things down because the questions weren’t stopping.
That one presentation, is the foundation of what BHS is today.
